April 25, 2022 – According to today’s Cargo Business News, April’s national average spot rates for dry van freight have already fallen to $2.86 a mile from $3.06 a mile in March. While spot rates account for an estimated 15-20% of all trucking, these rates are negotiated on a per load basis by brokers and carriers. The report notes that, “Most truckers hauling spot-market loads are small carriers, and predominately owner-operators with a single truck.” Offsetting this drop in rates, April fuel prices are surging hovering around $5.10 per gallon, a $400 fuel tank increase compared to April 2021 costs.
